    How on earth are you allowed to shoot a .50BMG in a farmers field and close to a road?

    • @letshuntdinner
      @letshuntdinner 5 месяцев назад

      It's quite simple really. So the rifle is just a section 1 rifle like other sporting rifles. I've used this area as a testing range for many years and the rifle has a top end moderator making it remarkably quiet so it sounds just like any moderated centerfire. There's no restrictions preventing people setting up a temporary range so long as you comply with the principals of the 28 day rule, but the onus is placed squarely on the firer to ensure safety of all shots fired which is where you need to carefully assess your range for suitability and do have your risk assessments done and range order policies! But certainly yes I'm shooting directly away from the road in a controlled environment with safety my prioriy at all times. Cheers!

      @@letshuntdinner Are you absolutely sure this is true?? I heard a story off a mate regarding some idiot losing his ticket for doing just that and not following his FAC conditions . Presumably you must have the 50BMG authorised for deer stalking in the UK? Otherwise it is ranges with a safety certificate for high muzzle energy cartridges only! The trouble is that one person acting irresponsibly could soil the bed for so many others !!

    • @letshuntdinner
      @letshuntdinner 4 месяца назад

      @@Srriflery9681so yes, The conditions I have were drafted by the chief inspector to specifically allow me to do what you see in the video. I mean sure, the onus in on me to ensure safety and I have commercial insurance with RA and RO policies but testing with this rifle is not an issue.

    • @letshuntdinner
      @letshuntdinner 5 месяцев назад

      Well, to be fair i'd stopped using 308 with lead free because the performance wasn't good enough with the bullet options available. But the design I've worked on is just better and acts much more like lead so my confidence is back for using 308 and yeah lead free is OK so long as you use my bullets lol

    • @stevenobrien_22-250
      @stevenobrien_22-250 5 месяцев назад

      would i possibly be able to get some info from you regarding referencing 308 lead free bullets you recommend, as now a few of the forestry companies stipulate only lead free and although ive had decent kills with rws 308 its not great@@letshuntdinner

    • @letshuntdinner
      @letshuntdinner 5 месяцев назад

      @@stevenobrien_22-250 in fairness, any bullet is going to work if it goes in the right place but compared to lead the flight distance when chest shooting deer is on average a lot lot further. So for 308, the best results were always with the lightest fastest options like 110gr Barnes ttsx but they just didn't match lead. On cost you just can't beat the ppu Z Grom bullet which is their grom hunting bullet with a part tin core. They are meant for boar really but however you cut it shooting lead free you need a dog!. The UltraGame bullets I've been working on were to get lead like performance from lead free and so far they're delivering as you can see haha. Just reds to shoot and that's all the testing done so can get them on the market.

    Great video,well done- isn’t that type of damage exactly why lead ammo is so useful, hard to see copper doing that,we don’t have to use copper in Ireland yet , don’t think I will until I have to! (Might try it for a fun experiment alright though)

    • @letshuntdinner
      @letshuntdinner 5 месяцев назад

      yeah, with the lead ban problem coming I started working on a copper design that would work as near as lead as I could get. Pretty much all of the lead free stuff just doesn't dump energy like lead core stuff so the design I've been working on aims to fill that gap. Cheers!

    • @letshuntdinner
      @letshuntdinner 6 месяцев назад

      Yeah so, it's important to be clear about this so people don't think you can just get a bmg on an open ticket and normally such a calibre is specifically conditioned for range only as part of being a member of named organisations! The conditions that are placed on your FAC generally relate to your good reason and in my case due to land I have to carry out 50 cal bullet design testing I can use off range too of suitable land. But also, specifically for taking abroad hunting which for me leads up to big pest species in Africa and the US hopefully later this year!

    • @Glimpsedshow
      @Glimpsedshow 6 месяцев назад

      Gotcha, so your SR is hunting big game abroad, it's not conditioned for anything in the UK, but you have the caveat that you can essentially zero it on private land just for ammunition and bullet testing. Fair enough. @@letshuntdinner

What powders are you using and what grain charges for each bullet. I've been a Ballastician for over 50+ years. I have developed many many rounds and powder combinations of several dozen caliber rifles and hand guns in that time frame. I know what works and what doesn't especially for the 7MM Mag.

    I understand why some places don't allow the use of a lead bullet. At the same time your video shows a major problem with a solid copper bullet. The answer used in the USA is the use of a fully bonded bullet which holds onto the jacket and retains almost 100% of its weight. Where the solid copper bullets retain there weight they lack the expansion of a fully bonded lead bullet. In hunting you want to kill the animal at the spot of impact and not have it run off to die. This is a problem if the bullet doesn't expand well and dump all the energy in the animal. You also made a good point about where that solid copper bullet is going to go after leaving the animal. Nosler makes wonderful fully bonded bullets along with the Gold Dot bullet line produced by Speer. Both of these bullets retain almost 100% of their weight and what is lost will be found inside the animal. I find that in hunting a humane kill should be of the highest importance! Having your game run off after being shot is not humane. I think that the solid bonded bullet is a good middle ground for the environment and the animal. I did enjoy your video and look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future.
